I really like the things John Bytheway Says about Isaiah.
"As an undergraduate student at Brigham Young University, I took a rigorous class called Business Writing. I was taught a formula for writing that is consistent with our modern culture — “Say what you’re going to say, say it, then say what you’ve said. Be concise, use simple words rather than complex, mutli-syllable phrases. Be brief, clear, and direct. Deny the listener the right to misunderstand.”
Isaiah did not take that class. His method of writing was taught somewhere else on campus, perhaps in the Humanities Writing class. Isaiah was a poet, and an intellectual. He was also what LDS scholar Victor L. Ludlow called a “deliberately difficult” prophet. I suspect the Humanities Writing class had instructions more like these:
I didn't feel as bad anymore reading that! hahaConceal what you’re going to say. Never use the same noun twice when referring to a person, group or place (Isaiah uses five different names to describe the same place in one instance). Speak of future events in past tense at times. In fact, have no time frame — move in and out of past, present and future without telling the reader what you’re doing. Use complex symbolism rather than simple parables. Never let anyone know whether you’re being literal or figurative."
2 Nephi Chapter 7: Isaiah 50 compare. Yeah.... don't really understand anything, so I am going to have to break it down as I go and then reread it all at the end I think haha.
- 1 Basically, the Lord is using a divorce to compare to us. He is asking, did I divorce you or did you leave me?
- 2 Jesus says when I came there was no man who would accept that I was the Christ, and nobody who would listen to me. So does that mean that my power is any less and that I can't accomplish what I came to do? Then he gives examples of how he dried up the sea and delivered his people out of Egypt, clearly showing that his power has not been lost.
- 3 Well, sackcloth is a fabric that is worn by people who are mourning. So here he is using this analogy to predict how the heavens will go dark at the crucifixtion.
- 4 The Lord taught Jesus so that he would be able to speak and comfort us at the right time. The father is in CONSTANT communication about his children. It says "when ye are weary he waketh morning by morning." I LOVE that verse.
- 5 I am going to be obedient to what the Lord has asked me to do, and you should also.
- 6 I will be scourged and the whiskers out of my beard will be pulled off? Which I think is just a way of saying how much Christ is going to be degraded and they will try to shame him.
- 7 Jesus says how God will help him and he will not be stopped from accomplishing his task, and he compares his face to flint which is very hard and that symbolizes how he will be firm and steadfast. He knows that he has nothing to fear, because the Lord is behind him.
- 8 He tells us that the Lord is near, and proud of what I am doing. Then he asks who wants to challenge that? He says let's stand by each other (which I read some people think means take it to court). He also says that if they contend him they shoudl face him and he will prevail with the Lord's word.
- 9 He reiterates that the Lord will help him, so everyone who condemns him will end up being useless and destroyed (he compares them to old garments). He uses moths in other times in the scriptures to symbolize destruction. He is saying that the wicked may have their day when they think everything is fine, but eventually they will end up being destroyed.
- 10 He asks who believes in the Lord, and obeys, and gets through darkness by the light of the gospel instead of the light of the world?
- 11 Then he talks to the wicked people that kindle fire (making their own light). He says "walk in the light of your fire and in the sparks which ye have kindled) which basically means that he is talking to anyone who is trying to live according to their own philosophies instead of by his. Then he tells those people he is addressing that they will one day lie down in sorrow and that they will be miserable if they try to get by and get through life without God).
2 Nephi 8 : Isaiah 51- 52:1-3
- 1 God tells us to look to our covenant that was given to Abraham and Sarah (the rock) and our origins because we are born of the covenant given to them.
- 2 He reiterates the same thing, Abraham 2: 9-11
- 3 The Lord tells us that he will comfort Zion (pure) and make us once again like the garden of Eden and give us a great reward.
- 4 Christ tells us to listen to him when he gives us revelation and that he will give us laws that will bring light to the nations.
- 5 My ability to save you is near and I will judge everyone. The sea bordering lands (Promised Land) should have faith and hope in me and trust my power.
- 6 Look up to heaven and then look at the earth at everything I have created. Heavens will fade away and the earth will become old and decay awake, and the people who live on earth will also die away (get old) like old clothes. However, the salvation I am offering you is eternal and my ability to save you won't die away or be ruined. That is why you should be so hopeful.
- 7 Everyone who is righteous, everyone who has taken covenants with me, listen to me: You have nothing to be afraid of. Do not be afraid of the insults of men or their criticisms.
- 8 He says the "moth shall eat them up like a garment" which means that the wicked people he is talking about will be destroyed like a moth eats clothes. Then he says the "worm shall eat them like wool" which is another saying to mean that they will be destroyed like all things will be, EXCEPT his deliverance he will give us. That is the only thing that will last forever and eternity.
- 9 Then get up and use your power! Help us the way you helped the prophets and people in ancient days. Aren't you the one who cut the devil and the people who served him? He uses the example of "cut Rahab" and "wounded the dragon" to explain these. Rahab=the mythical sea monster who represents the Devil and nations who serve him. Dragon=Satan.
- 10 Aren't you the one who parted the Red Sea and made a passageway to redeem the children of Israel from bondage in Egypt? That was a symbolism for the Atonement which will provide a pathway for the deliverance out of the world of sin.
- 11 If the answer is year, Israel will come unto Zion gathered and singing and eternal joy and righteousness will be on their heads. They will be happy and have joy and have no mourning or sorrow (sign they would be being righteous).
- 12 Yes, I am the man who you ask about. The one who comforts you. Why do you trust in mortal man who are only going to have a short life cycle (like grass) when you should be trusting in God?
- 13 How could you forget me after everything I have done for you? I created you and all of this. How have you feared all of these mortal enemies and opressions more than you fear me? Where is the power of mortal men when the day will come when mortal enemies won't be able to hurt you anymore?
- 14 All of scattered Israel seems to hope that one day they will be set free, and that theyw ill be allowed to return to their land of inheritance and they will still be given spiritual bread or gospel teaching to live by.
- 15 But, do not lose hope Israel. Have Trust in me (your God) just as they trusted in me when I roared the waves (drowning Pharaoh's armies in the Red Sea).
- 16 I gave you my gospel and I watch over you, so that I can help you eternally progress and everything I have done has been for you and your benefit.
- 17 So YOU get up all my covenant people who have gone astray and brought this upon yourselves (drinking the cup of the Lord's fury). You have paid a terrible price for your wickedness.
- 18 The people of Jerusalem have gone astray (Lamanites especially, but everyone wicked) and they will spend many years without prophets because of their wickedness.
- 19 These two sons (prophets-Ephraim and Manasseh) will be caled in the last days to prevent the total destruction of the Jews. Or that could also mean Mormon and Moroni for the Nephites. They will watch you whie you go through desolation and destruction and famine and wars, but I will comfort you through them. Through obedience you will be able to recognize the true priesthood because it is my power.
- 20 The wicked parts of Israel and the Nephites in the BOM have fainted (which means to shirk their covenant responsibilities and will be in danger of permanent destruction) except those two prophets who lie at the head of all the streets (pathway to covenant and righteousness). As a wild bull in a net they are full of the fury of the Lord (they hate unrighteousness because they truly have the Lord's power to administer destruction to the wicked, they will do exactly that if that is what I ask of them)
- 21 So listen up, Israel you are full of sin and out of control (drunk with wickedness not actual wine)
- 22 I am your Lord talking and I am begging you to listen and know that I have not deserted you. I have taken away the cup of my fury, so do not drink out of it again. (basically, I saved my faithful people before. I can do it again).
- 23 I will put that cup of fury into the hands of them that are your enemies and try to destroy my people. So anyone who tries to destroy you will be destroyed themselves. They have walked all over you, but I have the power and I will help you defeat those who have been dominating you.
- 24 You Wake up, take strength and return to the priesthood power which you have lost (D&C 113:7-8) and put on your most beautiful garments and prepare to be with the savior. Only people who keep their covenants and are clean will be able to dwell in Jerusalem after everyone is gathered.
- 25 Shake thyself from the dust (or from being walked on by the forces of evil), arise (from fallen state), sit down (take a seat of honor, redeemed at last), hopefully in Jerusalem where you will be gathered. Loose yourself (free yourself) from the bands of thy neck (bondage of sin/wickedness).
- 1 This can be applied to all men.
- 2 In the last days the Lord's covenant church will be in communication with the Lord (that is what the mount symbolizes) and they will get closer to him by making covenants. They will come from every nation.
- 3 Many people will want to go to the Lord and into the temple and hear what he has to say, and Christ will teach us and be the ruler again.
- 4 Christ will judge the nations and tell them who and what is right. They will use their weapons for pruning and gardening, which basically means that there will be peace in the lands.
- 5 Come with me and walk in the light of the Lord, even if you have been wicked.
- 6 The Lord has forsaken his people (House of Jacob) because they are taking on traditions from the East like false Gods and religions, and taking beliefs from the Philistines (fortune telling, witchcraft, sorcery) and marrying outside of the covenant.
- 7 Their land has a lot of riches and they are very materialistic. They are using military power to get their goals and keep their rich status (chariots)
- 8 They also have many idols and they rely on themselves and love their own work instead of the work of the Lord.
- 9 The mean man will not humble himself (even the lowest people wouldn't humble themselves) and the great man (weath, power, social) won't humble himself either. The Lord can't give any forgiveness without humility.
- 10 Even if you are in a cave, or hidden below the earth, the wicked still won't be able to withstand the glory and brightness or the Lord at the Second Coming.
- 11 Men will be humbled, and their pride will go away because only the Lord will be exalted at the second coming.
- 12 The Second Coming will soon happen for all Nations and all people: the wicked and the righteous.
- 13 It will happen for the cedars of Lebanon (high and mighty people who use cedars to adorn and fragrance) because they are prideful. It will happen for the Oaks of Bashan (rich and powerful who use this expensive wood in their building).
- 14 It will happen on high mountains, and hills, and all nations and people. He will have dominion over the entire earth
- 15 It will happen on ever high tower and past ever fence (every symbol of strength and security that mortal man relies upon instead of God's trust).
- 16 It will happen on all of the ships in the sea and the ships of Tarshish (ships that are known for their ability to travel long distances and carry cargo and be warships) and on all pleasant pictures (the ships that are for the rich people with fancy sails and things).
- 17 Then loftiness and haughtiness of men will be crushed and they will be made humble and the Lord will be exalted.
- 18 He will abolish the idols completely.
- 19 The wicked will go into the rocks or caves (this could be symbolic of seeking sanctuary in a worldly work rather than in a church built upon THE ROCK, or it could mean trying to hide from his glory). The fear of the Lord will come upon them and the glory of his majesty will smite them when the earth shakes.
- 20 When the Lord comes a man will put his idols and material things with the bats (darkness). I am not sure if that means that they will put them away and realize that they are not good, or put them away as in trying to hide them and protect them?
- 21 The wicked will try to go into the clefts of ricks and tops of ragged rocks becuase they will be so scared that the Lord will come upon them and the majesty of his glory shall smite them.
- 22 So stop trying to trust in the works of mortals and men (whose breath is in his nostrils). Why would you trust him when you can only be saved eternally through trust in God?
2 Nephi 13 : Isaiah 3
- 1 The Lord will take away the entire support system of Jerusalem and Judah, and they will collapse basically. He will take away the stay (Hebrew for "support" masculine" and the staff (Hebrew for "support" femenine), all of their bread and water etc.
- 2 He will take away their leaders and their military power and chiefs, their judges, their prophet and the divinities and elders. So everything that has been working well will stop working
- 3 He will take away the captain of fifty and the honorable men and counselors and craftsman and the eloquent orator (so everything that is contributing to the world materialistic side of the society will stop)
- 4 He will give them in return very immature leaders (children and babes to rule over them).
- 5 The people will opress each other and children will not respect and learn from their elders. There will not be any respect for authority anymore.
- 6 When this all happens, a man will seek a scapegoat and they will search for someone, anyone, who is willing to offer a solution to their problems. They will basically be blindly putting their trust in whoever says they deserve it.
- 7 Then the people they ask for solutions from will refuse, becuase they will already have too many of their own problems to solve.
- 8 The reason that Jerusalem will be destroyed is because the people are not obedient and they are against the Lord.
- 9 You can see in their countenance that they are wicked, and they will even practice sodomy (wicked all the way-Genesis 19 5a footnote). They won't even try to hide it anymore just like the people of Sodom and it will destroy everything. They will finally get what they caused and what they deserve because of their actions.
- 10 The righteous will also get what they deserve because of their actions.
- 11 Wo unto the wicked, because they will get what they deserve.
- 12 Women and children will rule over them (righteous priesthood and family structure will be so messed up). When covenants are broken the leaders turn wicked and their teachings are distrorted, and society will even further fall apart.
- 13 The Lord will be our advocate and we will be judged even the rulers and elders.
- 14 The Lord will tell the elders and the rulers that they have ruined his vineyard and that they are only so rich becuase they have stolen from the poor.
- 15 What do you even have to say to defend yourself? How dare you beat my people to pieces, and shame the poor and leave them in the dust?
- 16 The daughters of Zion are prideful and judgemental and lustful, and they walk in ways to look appealing and flaunt with ankle bracelets and other jewelry of the rich (VERY VAIN)...
- 17 Becuase of those reasons the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head (make them bald) and they will be treated as slaves/objects/poor rather than held up so high. The Lord will discover their secret parts (shame them by exposing their evil actions).
- 18 At the second coming the Lord will take their jewelry and adornments etc. and make them no longer beautiful (bravery). Tinkling ornaments-expensive footwear. Calls (Cauls)-headbands. Round Tires like the moon-(moon shaped necklaces and earrings).
- 19 The chains (necklaces/earrings) and bracelets and mufflers (veils).
- 20 He will take away the bonnets and headbands and perfume (tablets) and earrings.
- 21 He will take away the rings and nose jewelry.
- 22 He will take away the special festival clothing that is unecessary and the mantles (gowns) and wimples (cloaks or shawls or veils worn over women's heads) and the crisping-pins (money purses)
- 23 He will take away the glasses (mirrors and nice things) and fine linen and hoods (turbans) and veils. Those are basically all of the fashion items popular for rich females in the time this was written. SO he will remove all materialism.
- 24 Instead of the sweet smell there will be a stink and instead of a girdle (waistband) there will a rent (rope used on slaves) and instead of nice hair there will be baldness and instead of a stomacher (an ornamented cloth worn over torso by rich women) they will be girlded with sackcloth (crappier cloth used in time of mourning). There will be burning instead of beauty (branding which represents slavery).
- 25 There won't be that many men left because so many of them will die in war and be at battle.
- 26 Jerusalem's gates will mourn and be depressed. Jerusalem will be cleaned out and sit on the ground (posture of mourning). It will be brought down altogether because of wickedness.
2 Nephi 14 : Isaiah 4
- 1 When this time happens, many men will take one man and demand to support themselves and be independent. They will only want to be married to remove the stigma of being single and left alone at a time of war. The purpose for marriage will be lost.
- 2 The millennium the Branch of the Lord will be beautiful and glorious and the fruit on it will be excellent and comely for those who are redeemed.
- 3 All of the righteous that are left in Jerusalem will be Holy and get their reward.
- 4 When the Lord washes away the filth of the daughters of zion and cleansed the earth, and destroyed Jerusalem and he will cleanse the earth with fire.
- 5 The Lord will make his presence known in every dwelling place of mount Zion and her people (a cloud and smoke by day/shining of a flaming fire by night). The glory of Zion will protect all.
- 6 There will be a tabernacle (shelter or canopy-in Hebrew there is a marriage canopy that represents the remarriage of Christ and his people) that will protect the people and bring peace for the millenium.
2 Nephi 15 : Isaiah 5
2 Nephi 16 : Isaiah 6
- 1 Isaiah says that he is now going to make a poem about his people and Christ and his house of Israel. Christ has a very fruitful vineyard in a hill (the land of Israel).
- 2 He protected his people and gathered out the stones thereof (he removed those things that hindered growth and gave it chances to succeed) and planted it with the choicest vine (with the seed of Abbraham and Jacob) and put a tower (prophets/watchers) within them, and also made a wine-press (expecting a good outcome or a good harvest). He believed that it would bring goodness forth within the people, but the people became wicked and apostate (wild grapes).
- 3 Please Inhabitants of Jerusalem, betwixt Christ (me) and my vineyard (Israel in apostate state). SO basically he is telling us to judge between him and Israel after he tells us all of the facts.
- 4 What else could I have possibly done for Israel? I did everything that I thought would help it to bring forth good fruit, but the fruit was still wild. So why did that happen?
- 5 Now I know what I have to do to Israel. I will tear down the protection and it will get eaten by the animals and it will be destroyed.
- 6 I won't leave anyone to take care of the vineyard and it won't get pruned or hoed or anything, it will become like a wasteland (no prophets). Then thorn and briers will come (deviant doctrines/beliefs/behaviors and there will also be no rain (revelation) anymore.
- 7 The vineyard and plants we talk about are Israel and Judah. Christ expected justice, goodness, kindness, fairness etc. and he saw oppression. He expected righteousness but all he could find was a cry (righteous crying because of wicked/violent cry like battle).
- 8 Wo unto them that join house to house (make unfair alliances) til there can be no place for the poor to be in the earth. So in other words, Wo unto you who have power and deal under the table to get the poor off of their lands of inheritance. These are the people who just keep buying more and more land and housing etc. and gaining property, but then they are pushing everyone else away so they are left alone in the land with their belongings.
- 9 Isaiah heard from the Lord that many houses will be desolate and great and far cities will be emptied.
- 10 Ten acres of vineyard (ten yoke of oxen can plow 5 acres) will yield one bath (5.8 gallons) and the seed of a homer (6.2 bushels/58 gallons) shall yield an epaph (one bath/5.8 gallons). So basically, since the wealthy have taken all of the land from the poor society will become unproductive. aka ten acres will only create almost 6 gallons, and 10 baskets of seed will only make one basket of grain.
- 11 Wo unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink, that continue until night and wine inflame them. So basically wo unto those who wake up searching for alcohol (wickedness symbol) and then spend all day trying to become more drunk (just a pitiful/wicked lifestyle of unrighteousness and seeking after things that won't actually make them happy).
- 12 They seek to be merry and party with music etc. and good food and wine, but they don't even notice God.
- 13 That is why his people are in captivity spiritually and physically and the leaders do not have the knowledge of God, and the people aren't learning any of his word (dried up with thirst). It is like a famine of hearing the words of God.
- 14 So, hell has grown to fit all of these wicked people. That includes all of the people who glory, and follow the world, and are vain or pomp and those that love the world.
- 15 The normal man will be humbled and the mighty man will be humbled and the proud will be humbled. Everyone will be.
- 16 Christ will be exalted and the Lord will triumph
- 17 Then sheep will graze on the destroyed land, basically saying it will just be completely desolate. Strange people will live in and eat in the wicked's houses that were once so important to them.
- 18 Wo unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity and sin as it were with a cart rope . (Basically, wo unto the wicked who are so tied to their sins that unholiness follows them wherever they go)
- 19 They will tell the Lord to hurry up and prove what he is going to do, so that they will believe him.
- 20 Wo unto them that call evil good, and good evil, that put darkness for light and light for darkness, that put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. (Those who change and distort and pervert the standards).
- 21 Wo unto the wise in their own eyes and prudent in their own sight (Those who make their own rules in order to justify their own behaviors and desires)
- 22 Wo unto the mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink. (the leaders who live messed up lives and contentious and brag about the wicked things they are doing)
- 23 They justify the wicked for reward and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him. (They let the wicked go free because of bribes, while refusing to give the innocent their innocence)
- 24 They will rot up, just like a fire destroys something and their flowers will be destroyed. They will be destoyed because they have cast away the law and despised the Holy One of Israel
- 25 These are the reasons why the Lord is angry, and why he is going to punish them. This is why there will be such terrible destruction due to wickedness. Even though he is so angry, his hand is still stretched out, and wicked people can still repent.
- 26 He will lift up an Ensign (flag/gospel) to far nations and let them know it is time to gather The righteous will come quickly and not be tired.
- 27 None of them will sleep and they will travel so quickly (the analogy is that it will be so quickly they won't even need a change of clothing)
- 28 Their arrows will be sharp and their bows ready(hunting for converts) and their horses hooves shall be counted like flint (giving off sparks like the wheel of a train) and their wheels like a whirlwind (modern cars) and their roaring like a lion (jet engines).
- 29 The missionary forces will roar like young lions (teach with convinction) and they will convert people and bring them to safety. Nobody will be able to preven the missionary work.
- 30 In those days, evil will roar against good like the roaring of the sea (constant) and if they (the forces of good) look unto the land they will see darkness and sorrow and the light of heaven darkened (wars, pollutions, misfortunes, negative things)
2 Nephi 16 : Isaiah 6
- 1 In the year that King Uzziah died (745 BC approx) I (Isaiah) saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up (exalted) and his train (followers/light) filled the temple.
- 2 Above the throne there was angels (seraphim) and each one had six wings (wings symbolize the power to move and act in God's work D & C 77:4). Two wings covered their face, two covered their feet, and two they used to fly.
- 3 One angel said unto another saying HOLY HOLY HOLY is the Lord of Hosts, and the whole earth is full of his glory.
- 4 The foundations of the gate into the Lord's presence shook when his voice sounded, and the house was filled with smoke (this is symbolic of God's presence like at Mount Sinai)
- 5 Then I (Isaiah) said: Wo unto me. He didn't feel like he belonged in the presence of the Lord because he was just a mortal man who had sinned. He said "I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips). Then he mentions how he realizes that he dwells with such unclean people because he has seen the Savior himself.
- 6 One of the angels flew over to me holding a lit coal that he had taken from the fire with tongs (representing Christ's sacrifice or atonement and it symbolizes God's power to cleanse by fire)
- 7 He put it on my mouth and said since this has touched your lips you are forgiven and your sin is gone.
- 8 I also heard the voice of the Lord saying: whom shall I send, and who wil go for us? and I said send me because I knew I had been prepared because of the atonement.
- 9 The Lord said okay go and tell the people. They will hear and see you but they will not understand you.
- 10 Make the heart of the people fat (insensitive to spirit) and their ears heavy (they won't be able to understand the word) and shut their eyes (rejection of light) until they can see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand witih their hearts and be converted and healed. (Maybe this is why Isaiah wrote the way he did, so that we can still only understand what he is saying if we have the spirit with us, otherwise we can read it and see it but we still don't really understand what he is trying to say)
- 11 How long should I do this for? The Lord answered and said until the destruction of Israel.
- 12 YOu should do it until the Lord has removed men far away, for there shal be a great forsaking in the midst of the land.
- 13 But there will still be a tenth remnant that will return and be eaten (pruned to make them better again) as a teil-tree (a tree associated with covenant making that can remake itself from only a stump), and as an oak (can also recreate itself), whose substance (life potential within the tree that allows it to regrow) is in them when they cast their leave (in winter they might look dead, but the sap inside of them is still alive); so the Holy seed shall be the substance thereof (seed=lifesource or savior and substance=stump). Basically, Israel will be restored after it is destroyed.
2 Nephi 17 : Isaiah 7
- 1 Israel, Syria and Judah went to destroy Jerusalem, but they could not take it over.
- 2 The House of David (Jerusalem) was told that Ephraim had joined in alliance with the other two countries and their king (Ahaz) and his people were terrified.
- 3 The Lord told Isaiah to go and meet Ahaz and though shearjashub (the remnant shall return). You will find him at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field (where they wash clothes)
- 4 When you find him tell him to relax and not be fearful because the two countries (burning pieces of wood that have the potential to ignite a huge fire). They are just blowing smoke and think that they are tougher than they are.
- 5 Because they are plotting against you and saying:
- 6 We need to go take over Judah and breach it (break down the city walls and take over the capital) and put the son of Tabeal in charge as king there.
- 7 But it doesn't matter what they say, becuase the Lord says that it will not happen and you shouldn't worry about it.
- 8 Syria is only as strong as Damascus, and they have a weak leader, and Israel will be completely broken down and scattered and destroyed within 65 years.
- 9 Samaria, the capital city of Ephraim is led by Pekah and they are all weak. I cannot help you and save you though if you do not believe in me.
- 10 The Lord speaks more to Ahaz
- 11 He tells him to ask for a sign, anything he wants, to prove that the Lord is talking to him.
- 12 Ahaz responds saying he isn't going to ask for anything because he doesn't need to test the Lord.
- 13 Isaiah said, listen Judah, it is one thing to try my patience, but are you really going to try the patience of God?
- 14 Since you reject the word of the Lord through a prophet, the Lord himself will give you a sign and a virgin will concieve and bear a son and shall call his name Immanuel (it literally means "God with us".
- 15 He will eat butter and honey (poor people foods) instead of being born into luxury as a king or anything, that he may know to refuse the evil and to choose the good.
- 16 In the time it takes the baby to grow old enouggh to know good from evil, the lands against them will be taken over by Assyria.
- 17 The Lord will bring Ahaz and the people of Judah and Israel something that hasn't happened since Ephraim left Judah (since the tribes split). The king of Assyria will be acting for the Lord.
- 18 When the Lord decides, he will signal the troubles and plagues and destruction just like the ones in Egypt, and Assyria will come like a bee to deliver a sting.
- 19 Basically, enemies will be everywhere. They will be in the holes of rocks, and upon all thorns and upon all buses and in valleys etc.
- 20 Then you will be shaved like slaves by Assyria and teir people and king. He says Assyria will take over every part of them.
- 21 After all of that has happened, a man will still nourish a young cow and two sheep (even though everything will be destroyed, the aniamsl will outnumber the survivors of Judah)
- 22 The few domestic animals hat are left, will be able to supply all of the survivors with food and nutrients.
- 23 Then, every place will be back in it's original state and the vineyards that are worth so much will have briers and thorns (apostasy)
- 24 Everywhere will be wilderness again and men will hunt everywhere because everywhere will be like that. It will be completely overgrown and wild beasts will roam again apparently.
- 25 People will not even o to the land that was once fertile for farming, because it will be too wild. The only life there will basically be grazing animals.
2 Nephi 18 : Isaiah 8
- 1 The Lord told Isaiah: Write down everyting about Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz (Isaiah's newborn son whose name literally means "to speed to the spoil, he hasteneth the prey")
- 2 Isaiah says that he took Uriah (priest) and Zechariah to witness the paper writing
- 3 Then Isaiah went to his wife, and she concieved and when she had the child, the Lord told Isaiah to name him Maher-shalal-hash-baz.
- 4 The Lord told Isaiah that before his baby would even be old enough to say "Mommy" and "Daddy" Syria and the spoil of Samaria would be taken away by the King of Assyria.
- 5 The Lord also told Isaiah:
- 6 As long as the people (Judah and Jerusalem) refuse the living waters that go softly (gentle like CHrist and constant), and as long as you rejoice in the downfall of Syria and Israel,
- 7 the Lord will bring the waters of the river (strong and many-Assyrians) upon them and they will take over and the glory will be Assyria's. he uses an analogy of Judah flooding.
- 8 Assyria will go through Jurdah and Judah will be up to its neck in Assyrians, they will reach all the way to Jerusalem and Assyria will occupy the thy of the future Messiah.
- 9 If you make alliances with earthly kings Judah, you will be broken into pieces. Listenm even though the House of Israel is going through all of these trials and things, the Lord is in control, and other countries who try to take advantage of their weakness and trials should beware. ("broken in pieces" is said three times, which is apparently a superlative in Hebrew)
- 10 Go ahead and plot against Judah if you want foreign nations but it won't work and your plans will fail. God has full control over what is and will happen to the House of Israel.
- 11 The Lord told Isaiah that he shouldn't get in the way, and it is in his power.
- 12 He told him not to just tell people what they want to hear. Let them know that they shouldn't fear all of these conspiracies and alliances with Jerusalem.
- 13 Sanctify the Lord of Hosts himself, and let him be your fear and let him be your dread. Basically, rely on him and him alone, not approval from others.
- 14 He will then be a sanctuary for you, but he will cause Israel to stumble over him (a rock/stone) and be a gin (trap) for Jerusalem.
- 15 Many will fall and be broken and trapped and captured.
- 16 Finish making your prophecies Isaiah, and let them know what I am commanding, so that my righteous followers can obey.
- 17 Isaiah says that he will trust in the Lord and look for him even though he has removed his presence from Israel.
- 18 Isaiah says that himself and his children are signs and wonders in Israel for the Lord.
- 19 When the wicked tell you to seek fortune tellers or people who think they can contact the dead etc. to find out about what is going on now, don't you think you should seek those things from the Lord if they are things that we are supposed to hear?
- 20 Look in the scriptures and listen to what the prophets say and if it doesn't match up with what those fortune tellers and people are saying, then it is because they do not have the light of the spirit.
- 21 The wicked people of Judah shall pass through all of the trouble and destruction very hungry and unsatisfied with the things around them and when they are hungry and angry and curse God
- 22 And then they will look around them and still only see trouble and darkness and dimness of anguish and shall be driven to darkness.
2 Nephi 19 : Isaiah 9
- 1 The trials and tribulation around that time of destruction won't stay as bad as they worried it would when the Assyrians first attack Zebulun (Nazareth area) and Naphtali (Israel North). He will exalt the land after and give them great blessings after those bad events (Jesus grew up in Galilee and Israel was blessed through him, even though they were both rejected at one time)
- 2 The house of Israel that was in captivity and spiritual darkness will see the savior and they will hear his teachings while he is on earth. They will see the light even though they have been in darkness.
- 3 Christ will have many faithful followers, and they will gain a lot of glory and triumph, and divide the spoils or rewards.
- 4 Christ has broken the captivity of Israel (rod-power) and he used yoke of burden and staff of shoulder and rod of oppressor to describe that bondage. Basically Christ freed them from spiritually captivity as well as physical bondage.
- 5 All of the battle of the warrior is confused with noise (?) and the garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire (burning at the second coming-Joseph Smith-Isaiah 9 Footnote 5b)
- 6 Christ will be born for us, and he will be called wonderful counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace and the government shall be upon his shoulder. ( could mean literally he will take over and be ruler in those times, or could mean because during the millenium he will once again reign I am not really sure I get confused what is past and what is present and what is future in Isaiah. I think it is referring to the fact that he will once again reign during the millennium)
- 7 Governments will have increasing peace under his reign in his kingdom and it will be a just judgment place forever, not corrupt. We will cause it to be peaceful because of our constant enthusiasm towards such a great cause to serve him and give him glory. (zeal)
- 8 The Lord has sent his word to Jacob and he has taught Israel.
- 9 Now everyone even Ephraim (Northern Israel) and the inhabitants of Samaria (Northern Israel) will know the word of the Lord, even though they have been so proud and stout in their hearts.
- 10 The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones; the sycamores are cut down but we will change them into cedars (Israel Northern claims that they can't be destroyed successfully, so they are going to refortify using better materials)
- 11 Becuase of that wicked pride the Lord will send up enemies of Rezin against Northern Israel and ally his enemies to attack him.
- 12 The Syrians (on the East-in front) and the Philistines (West-behind) will destroy/take over Israel. "For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still" (The Lord will still let you repent if you will turn to him and lose your pride). That quote was also used in Isaiah previously.
- 13 The wicked people won't turn to him so he has to punish them, so if they won't repent then they are going to have all of this pain and never end up learning the lesson they need to.
- 14 So, the Lord will cut off head and tail from Israel government and false prophets) and branch (triumph symbol in John 12:13) and rush (reed=symbolic of low social status) in one day.
- 15 The ancient (wicked elder) is the head, and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail.
- 16 The leaders of the people cause them to err, and those who follow those leaders will be destroyed.
- 17 The Lord will not be happy at all with disobedient young men, and the Lord will not have mercy on any level of society (fatherless and widows). All of them are hypocrites and wicked and liars. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. He is begging AGAIN for them to repent and they can be forgiven still.
- 18 Wickedness burneth as the fire (out of control) and it will take over the briers and thorns (wickedness and overgrowth) and shall kindle in the thickets of the forests, that they will mount up like the lifting smoke.
- 19 The Lord will darken all of the land and the wicked people will be used as fuel of the fire. No man will even save his own brother.
- 20 They will be greedy and steal, but still be hungry and they will eat, and remain hungry and have no satisfaction. They will eat the flesh of their own arm (it will be so wicked they will be willing to turn against ANYONE even their kin and close friends)
- 21 Manasseh, Ephraim and Ephraim and Manaseh will be against Judah (The houses of Jacob who were trusted with the care of the house of Israel will even turn on each other). For all of this the Lord's anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. (AGAIN)
2 Nephi 20 : Isaiah 10. This is a Chiasmus.
2 Nephi 21 : Isaiah 11
2 Nephi 22 : Isaiah 12
2 Nephi 23 : Isaiah 13
2 Nephi 24 : Isaiah 14
2 Nephi 25 : NO Isaiah
- 1 Wo unto them who make and enforce unrighteous laws.
- 2 Wo unto them who turn away the needy from fair judgement and mistreat the poor and misfortunate.
- 3 What will the wicked so when I finally come and punish everyone, and when Assyria attacks? Who will they run to for help then? How important will their glory and posessions and wealth and power be then?
- 4 WIthout the Lord, the wicked will bow down under the prisoners and be killed. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
The Lord will Use Assyria to Punish Israel
- 5 Assyria will act for the Lord to destroy.
- 6 He will send Assyria against Israel (hypocritical nation) and against the wicked there. He assigns Assyria to take their spoil and overtake them and to tread them down like the mire (swampland) of the streets.
The Assyrian King Thinks he is In Control
- 7 The king of Syria doesn't realize he is a tool in the Lord's hands. He thinks he is able to do all of this alone, but he is a wicked man.
- 8 The king boasts that his military commanders are just as good as kings of other countries.
- 9 He says is not Calno as Carchemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? IS not not samaria as Damascus? Basically the king is bragging about towns he has taken over and saying nobody can fight them off.
- 10 He says I have taken over kingdoms whose Gods and idols are more powerful than those of Jerusalem and Samaria
- 11 So why wouldn't I be able to also capture Samaria and Jerusalem?
The Lord will punish Assyria, just like all other wicked people/places
- 12 When the Lord has finished his work he will punish the proud heart of the king of Assyria as well, and his arrogance. Assyria's king will get his fair judgement and punishment also after they are done being used to destroy Israel.
- 13 The Assyrian king brags that he is the strength behind the operation and that he is prudent and has overtaken so much land and treasure and people. He is very impressed with himself and his own kingdom.
- 14 He says that his hand rests in the riches of the people, and he has been gathering land and cities and kingdoms like someone would gather eggs out of a nest. Everybody is so afraid of me that they don't even try to fight back (no moved wing or opened mouth of peeped (chicken protecting eggs or reacting to eggs being taken out of nest).
Who Controls the Power?
- 15 Will the ax (king of Assyria) boast against the Lord that heweth (controls) the ax (Assyria? Shall the saw magnify itself against (defy) him that shaketh it (gives it power to be used? As if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself as if it were no wood? He is saying did those weapons of war/power seriously power themselves? Obviously the Lord was behind it all.
The Lord will be a burning Fire
- 16 Because of King of Assyria is so boastful and wicked the Lord will take away their power and under Assyria's glory he will kindle a burning like a burning of a fire (the Lord will burn Assyria)
- 17 The light of Israel (Christ) will be for a fire and his Holy One for a flame and will burn and destroy Assyria's thorn and briers in one day (In 2 Kings 19:35-37 185,000 Assyrians are recorded as having died due to a devastating illness while they slept, while they prepared to attack for Jerusalem)
Out of the remnant, only a portion will be there still
- 18 The Lord will take the glory of the king and his armies and wealth, in every possible way and they will be as a standardbearer fainteth (when the last soldier falls the flag falls with him).
- 19 The rest of the trees of his forest (remnants of Assyria's people) will be few. It will be such a small number that a child (who can't count very high yet) will be able to count them.
A remnant will return to Israel
- 20 In the last days, the remnant of Israel that have survived won't be dependent upon their enemies that overtook them anymore, but they will depend on the Lord again.
- 21 That righteous remnant will return to the Lord.
Out of the remnant, only a portion will remain
- 22 The people in Israel will be as the sand of the sea (numerous), yet a remnant of them will return (only a small amount will truly be converted to righteousness) and the consumption decreed will keep cleansing until the wicked all over the earth have been destroyed in the last days.
A Divine Consumption will be in the Land
- 23 The Lord will make a consumption in all the land
The tools of power are controlled by the Lord
- 24 Therefore, thus saith the Lord God of Hosts: O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian. He will take you over like in Egypt.
- 25 But it won't be very long before I will stop using the Assyrians as a tool of my anger.
- 26 The Lord of Hosts will scourge the Assyrians like the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb (where Gideon and his 300 miraculously defeated the Midianites) and his rod was upon the sea so shall he lift it up after the manner of Egypy (God will stop Assyria like he did with Moses rod)
Assyria's Power will be overcome
- 27 It shall come to pass that Assyria will be opressed and they will no longer control you, you won't be in bondage or captivity anymore. The yoke will be destroyed because of the covenants made by the Lord with House of Israel.
Assyria's Threat to Jerusalem will be in Vain (They will overtake many of the surrounding cities, and it will seem like Jerusalem is destined to be overcome, but it won't be)
- 28 Assyria has taken over Aiath, Migron and Michmash and has a lot of military might.
- 29 Assyria have gone over the passage and they are staying in Geba, Ramath is afraid and Gibeah of Saul has fled.
- 30 Cry and Lift up your voices Gallim, cause it to be heard unto Laish, oh poor anathoth.
- 31 Madmenah has been taken over and the inhabitants of Gebim are also getting ready to flee.
- 32 Assyria will remain at Nob (JUST outside of Jerusalem) ready to attack, and the Lord will shake his hand against them and prevent it.
Assyria will be humbled by the Lord
- 33 The Lord will lop the bough with terror (Trim them down to size-the Assyrian armies) and their leaders will be hewn down and the haughty will be humbled.
The wicked will be brought down
- 34 And the Lord will cut down the thickets of the forests (Assyria) with iron (axe) and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one (he made 185,000 of them fall in one night as they camped outside Jerusalem)

- 1 A rod (servant in the hands of the God) will come out of the Stem of Jesse (Jesse was the father of King David and Christ was of the royal David line so they are talking about Christ) and a branch shall grow out of his (Jesse's) roots (I think this means that the prophets later Joseph Smith will come from the same priesthood line, and get his authority from that line)
- 2 That prophet will have the spirit of the Lord, and the spirit of wisdom and understand and the spirit of counsel and might and the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.
- 3 He will be able to understand the fear of the Lord quickly and not judge on outward appearance, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears (listen to hearsay).
- 4 He will judge instead with righteousness and make things better for the poor and meek, and with his words (power) and his righteouness condemnation he will destroy the wicked.
- 5 He will always have righteous behavior and be centered on faith.
- 6 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid (young goat) and the calf and the young lion and fatling together and a little child shall herd them.
- 7 The cow and the bear shall feed and their young ones shall lie down together and the lion shall eat straw like the ox
- 8 The nursing baby will play on the hole of the asp (poisonous cobra) and the weaned child shall put his hand on the Cockatrice's (venemous viper) den.
- 9 They won't have any pain or hurt in the kingdom during the millenium because the earth will be full of complete devotion and knowledge and love of the Lord, even in the sea.
- 10 In the millennium, there will be a root of Jesse which will stand for an ensign (sign) to the people. The gentiles will seek it and it will be glorious. (this could be about Christ coming or about Joseph Smith restoring the gospel-it's dual purposed)
- 11 In that day, the Lord will set his hand again (2nd coming) to save the small amount of righteous people who are left from Assyria and from Egypt and from Pathros and from Cush and from Elam and from Shinar and from Hamath and from the islands of the Sea (all nations)
- 12 He will set up an Ensign (restore the church) for the nations and will gather the lost ten tribes and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.
- 13 The envy of Ephraim also shall depart and the enemies of Judah will be cut off. Ephraim will not envy Judah and Judah will not vex Ephraim (The tribes will unite and get along again)
- 14 The entire house will be able to overtake anyone who is their enemy.
- 15 The Lord will destroy the tongue of the Egyptian Sea (fertile Egyptt where the children of Israel were held in bondage) and with his mighty wind he shall shake his hand (power) over the river and shall smite it in the seven streams and make men go over dry shod. So basically, he will once again deliver them out of bondage.
- 16 There will be a highway (straight and narrow path) for the remnant of his people left in bondage, and they will be able to come out of that captivity.
2 Nephi 22 : Isaiah 12
- 1 And in that day they will praise the Lord because even though he was angry, they will realize that he is still there to comfort them even though they were wicked.
- 2 They will say God is my salvation and I trust him so I am not afraid. Foro the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song and he is also my salvation.
- 3 Therefore with joy shall ye draw water of the well of salvation (living water John 7:38-39)
- 4. In that day they will say Praise the Lord and call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted.
- 5 Sing unto the Lord for he has done excellent things and he is known in all the earth.
- 6 Cry and shout, though inhabitant of Zion; for great is the Holy one of Israel in the midst of thee.
2 Nephi 23 : Isaiah 13
- 1 Isaiah sees the wickedness and the destruction of Babylon.
- 2 Raise a banner up on the mountain and wave the righteous in that they may join the noble and great ones.
- 3 I have commanded my saints and covenant people and my anger is not upon them that glory in me.
- 4 THe sound of the righteous gathering together will be very loud and you will be able to hear the kingdoms gathering.
- 5 The righteous are coming from every part of the earth and they will get together to destroy the wicked amongst the earth.
- 6 THe wicked people will howl. The second coming is at hand, and it will be desutrction from the Lord.
- 7 Wicked powerful men will become weak and men will not be courageous anymore, unless it is courage through God.
- 8 THey will be afraid and sorrowful and will look to each other in shame.
- 9 Behold, the second coming comes, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.
- 10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light, when he comes forth there will be NO light (second coming signs)
- 11 I will punish the world for evil and the wicked for the sins and I will make the proud humble basically.
- 12 He will destroy so many men because of wickedness that there won't be many left to inherit all of their things.
- 13 I will shake the heavens and the earthquakes because of my anger.
- 14 Babylon will be as a chased roe (hunted deer) and as a sheep that no man taketh up (sheep without a shepard or someone to defend it) and they shall every man turn to his own people and flee everyone into his own land (they will abandon their lives and deny that it is their fault and will try to return back to their own lands without even repenting)
- 15 But every proud man will be destroyed anyways, even those who have been able to live a double standard until now.
- 16 Their children will also be destroyed (dashed to pieces before their eyes-chldren probably means the people who follow them). THeir houses will be spoiled and their wives ravished.
- 17 I will still up the persians against Babylon (Medes from Persia coquered Babylon in 538 BC). The babylonians won't be able to pay them off becuase the Persians won't care about their riches and things that they are offered.
- 18 THey will kill the men and the babies without any pity even on the children.
- 19 Babylon which is the top right now, will be like Chaldees' and Sodom and Gomorrah (very wicked cities that not only were destroyed but become completely desolate and never inhabited like that again)
- 20 It won't ever be inhabited and no one will live there from generation to generation. Arabians won't even pitch tents there, and shepards won't take their sheep there.
- 21 Wild Beasts will live there in the desert, and their houses will be homes to doleful creatures (sadness) and owls and birds of prey will dwell there and satyrs (demonic creatures of folklore) will dance there.
- 22 The wild beasts of the island will cry in their desolate homes and dragons in their pleasant palaces. Her time is near to come and her day shall not be prolonged (Babylon's time is up). I will destroy her very soon, but I will be merciful until the righteous there. The wicked will all be killed though.
- 1 The Lord will have mercy on the house of Isarael and will choose them and put them in their own land. Strangers will join them (converts)
- 2 The people who will help them get there will return to their own lands of promise and be in Israel and everyone will work hard and do their part and not be overtaken. THey will be able to overtake anyone who overtakes them.
- 3 In the millennium, the Lord will give Israel peace and make sure there is no bondage or fear or sorrow.
- 4 In the last day you will be able to taunt the king of Babylon and say: What the heck happened to you and your amazing city that was undefeatable?
- 5 The Lord has taken away your power because you are wicked.
- 6 The king of Babylon (Satan) who was continually wicked and hurting the righteous is now being punished and nobody can stop it.
- 7 Peace and Joy will be completely surroudning during the millennium
- 8 The fir-trees and cedars (symbols for the people) rejoice at what has happened to the wicked leader and how no lumberjack (chops them down) can get them now.
- 9 Hell is being prepared for those wicked leaders, and the most wicked leaders from the history of the world are getting ready to greet you. Hell has all of the wicked kings of past nations.
- 10 They will be able to ask him (newest wicked king) Where did your power go? Did you lose it all and become like us, cut down?
- 11 You can take your pomp with you, and there will not be any music and now you will be destroyed by maggots in hell just like we are. (basicaly the gift of having a glorified body will be lost)
- 12 How did you fall from heaven satan? You used to destroy nations and be so powerful, and now all of that power is destroyed!
- 13 Your desires were strong and you said you would go into heaven and become the highest power and sit with the Gods.
- 14 I will ascend above the rest and be the most high.
- 15 But Lucifer will be brought down to hell, so the sides of the pit (darkest parts of hell)
- 16 The people in hell will see that Satan lost his power and be so disgusted they will shame him and mock him and barely be able to look at him. THey will all think and say Is that really the man that caused all of these problems and took over all of the kingdoms?
- 17 Is that really the man that destroyed so many cities and so much land and refused to free any of his prisoners?
- 18 All of the kings of nations have glory, but now look at him.
- 19 But Satan is cast out of his grave like an abominable branch and he is so worthless now. Now he is ut like any other dead wicked person, thrust through with a sword and thrown into the pit to waste away JUST LIKE everyone else.
- 20 Satan won't be with those other kings and recieve any special honors because he has destroyd the land and slain so many. People who were controlled by a wicked king will never honor him.
- 21 None of Satan's followers will ever gain more power or be able to even become a ruler for a time like he was.
- 22 The Lord will rise up against all of those wicked and cut off from Babylon the name and his family and it will be completely destroyed.
- 23 I will make Babylon a possession for the bittern (birds in swamps) and pools of water (stagnant) and I will sweep it with the besom (broom) of destruction.
- 24 The Lord has covenanted saying that surely as I have thought, it will happen; and as I have planned, it will happen
- 25 I will bring the Assyrian in my land and treat him under foot (in other words, the Lord's people will destroy Assyria in the mountains or holy places where they are close to him in his land) Then they will no longer be in bondage.
- 26 This is the plan that is purposed upon the whole earth and this is the power of the Lord is stretched out and who can stop that?
- 27 For the Lord has planned, and who can prevent that? And his power is streched out and who can stop that?
- 28 In the year that Ahaz died (720 B.C.) this message was sent to the Philistines.
- 29 Don't rejoice, Philistines, because the power of the former king of Assyria that smote thee is dead; because a worse king is about to come forth.
- 30 The first born of the people will feed and the needy will lie down in safety (temporarily feel fine) but the Lord will kill their root with famine and the Assyrian king will slay them and destroy them.
- 31 You should all cry and weep because you will be reduced to nothing and there will come from the north a smoke (dust cloud made by the Assyrian army) and their army will be very united and powerful.
- 32 When people ask what happened to the Philistines the answer will be that the Lord has gathered zion and the poor of his people shall trust in him and he doesn't tolerate wicked people.
