Week #4 Student Teaching

Student Choice Assignments

Unit One

Topic Choices (Choose One)

Choice 1: Overview of the Last Week of the Savior’s Mortal Ministry

Read the information in the institute student manual about “The Last Days of Jesus’ Mortal Mission” (pp. 135–37). Then fill in the following chart with key events that took place during the Savior’s final week of mortality:
Day 1
Matt 21:1-10
Day 2
Day 3
Day 4
Day 5
Day 6
Day 7 (Sabbath)
Day of the Resurrection
  • Got a donkey and a colt to ride into the city.
  • A great multitude put palms in the street to greet him.
  • They shouted Hosanna.
  • He went straight to temple and looked.
  • Jesus went to the temple again and challenged the Jewish Leadership.
  • He threw out the gamblers and money exchangers.
  • He made it known that the temple was a place to worship God and pray, but not to seek personal gain.
  • When Jesus got to the temple, the priests challenged him asking what authority he had.
  • Jesus responded by sharing many parables and then basically telling them they were doomed as hypocrites.
  • After that, Jesus did not teach the public again, only his disciples.
  • The Jewish leaders knew he had won the argument but they needed to have him killed without upsetting the public, which was a lot easier when one of his own disciples betrayed him.
  • The records don’t talk about this da, but we know that Jesus knew about the plot against him.
  • They had the Passover meal where Jesus introduced the sacrament.  That is when he prophesied of his death and indicated who would betray him.
  • The intercessory prayer.
  • Jesus led the 11 apostles to Gethsemane.
  • This is my favorite part of any scripture.  It is when Jesus pled with his Father to “let this cup pass from me:nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.” (Matthew 26:39) Then the cup didn’t pass and Jesus suffered the pain of all men (D&C 18:11).
  • When he went back to apostles after his prayer, he told them his betrayal was near and a band led by Judas approached to sieze Jesus.  He did not fight it.
  • An illegal trial happened that night.
The Jewish leaders did not just want to kill him, they wanted to make sure that he was discredited.  So they charged him with blasphemy, but in order to kill him they needed a legal reason so they also charged him with sedition against the state because he claimed to be a “king” of the jews.
Pilate found him Guiltless, but the Jewish leaders riled the crowd.  Pilate gave in to the crowd to avoid uproar.
Jesus was executed by the Roman crucifixtion.
He voluntarily gave up his spirit.
  • This day was the Passover, which was a day where no bodies could be on the crosses.
  • They removed his body from the cross and buried him in a sealed tomb by two revering disciples.
  • Jesus body remained in the tomb on the Sabbath, but his spirit was ministering in the realm of departed spirits.  (Peter 3)
  • Jesus was risen.
  • This was the most memorable Sunday in history because it is the day that Jesus Christ came alive from the tomb and appeared before Mary.
  • This was our first example of resurrection.

Unit Two

Choice 1: Joseph Smith—Matthew. The Savior Taught About Future Events
*Note: Joseph Smith—Matthew is found in the Pearl of Great Price.
  1. Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:4 contains questions that the Savior’s disciples asked Him. Verses 5–20 contain the answer the Savior gave to their first question regarding the destruction of the temple, and verses 21–55 contain His answer to their other questions concerning His Second Coming and the destruction of the wicked. 1. Study 1 Nephi 22:16–22; Doctrine and Covenants 97:22, 25. Then write a statement that would give hope to a person who worries about the Second Coming.
I think the most comforting thing about the second coming is that the savior lived a life similar to the life that each of us lives.  We can mess up, and he understands.  We don’t need to be perfect to be saved at the second coming.  If our hearts are in the right place, and our desires and we are constantly repenting and trying to strengthen our relationship with him, then we will be okay.  He loves us and he wants the best for us we just need to always be doing our best.

16 For the time soon cometh that the fulness of the awrath of God shall be poured out upon all the children of men; for he will not suffer that the wicked shall destroy the righteous.
17 Wherefore, he will apreserve the brighteous by his power, even if it so be that the fulness of his wrath must come, and the righteous be preserved, even unto the destruction of their enemies by fire. Wherefore, the righteous need not fear; for thus saith the prophet, they shall be saved, even if it so be as by fire.
18 Behold, my brethren, I say unto you, that these things must shortly come; yea, even blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke must come; and it must needs be upon the face of this earth; and it cometh unto men according to the flesh if it so be that they will harden their hearts against the Holy One of Israel.
19 For behold, the righteous shall not perish; for the time surely must come that all they who fight against Zion shall be cut off.
20 And the Lord will surely aprepare a way for his people, unto the fulfilling of the words of Moses, which he spake, saying: A bprophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass that all those who will not hear that prophet shall be ccut off from among the people.
21 And now I, Nephi, declare unto you, that this aprophet of whom Moses spake was the Holy One of Israel; wherefore, he shall execute bjudgment in righteousness.
22 And the righteous need not fear, for they are those who shall not be confounded. But it is the kingdom of the devil, which shall be built up among the children of men, which kingdom is established among them which are in the flesh—

22 For behold, and lo, avengeance cometh speedily upon the ungodly as the whirlwind; and who shall escape it?

25 Nevertheless, Zion shall aescape if she observe to do all things whatsoever I have commanded her.
